Similarities The Pyramid of Djoser and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus are two of the most famous tombs in the world. The pyramid was built thousands of years ago, at around 2700 BCE, to honor the pharaoh Djoser. On the other hand, the mausoleum was built to commemorate King Mausolus of Caria. This tomb was built not too long ago, in 353 BCE. Both burial structures are very imposing. The mausoleum stands 45 meters above the ground, while the pyramid soars even higher- 62 meters! The architects were the finest of their time, and both buildings ended up being enormous layered stone structures. The Pyramid of Djoser has six mastabas. Similarly, the Mausoleum has six layers: the base, two platforms, the tomb, a pyramid-shaped structure, and a statue at the very top. In many aspects are these two tombs similar.

Differences Just as the Pyramid of Djoser and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus have numerous similarities, they differ in many ways. First, the pyramid was constructed under the order of Djoser himself. Meanwhile, the mausoleum was built after the passing of King Mausolus by his sister-wife Artemisia. In addition, the tomb of Pharaoh Djoser lies underground, beneath the pyramid. The coffin of King Mausolus rests about 32 meters above ground. Furthermore, the architect of the pyramid, Imhotep, designed the pyramid to be in a similar style to other Egyptian mastabas. However, the Turkish King Mausolus’ tomb was sculpted by the finest Greek architects of his time, including Scopas, Bryaxis, Leochares, Timotheos, and Praxiteles. These structures may seem alike, but in fact, they are very different.
